Goodluck Jonathan and Taiwo Akinkunmi
Vanguard recalls that the National Flag is an adaptation of the winning entry from Taiwo Akinkunmi, also called Mr Flag Man, in the contest dating back to 1959.
In the original there was a red sun with the rays on the white stripe. The judges removed the pattern and the flag has not been changed since.
At the time of the competition, Akinkunmi was a 23-year-old student of Norwich Technical College in England. He read in the newspaper about the contest for the design of the National Flag and decided to try his luck.
His variant became the winning one and was first used in the course of the celebration of the next year’s Independence Day, October 1.
